# Riding as a passenger

How players call a cab in CAS Advanced Taxi Job, by telegraph, with /taxi or by hailing, and how they pay the fare.

Any player who is not on a taxi shift can take a cab driven by another player. There are three ways to get one.

## Wire from a telegraph counter

At the telegraph counter (in Saint Denis, at the station beside the cab office) press **E** on **Wire for a cab**. A telegram blank opens:

| Line | What goes in it |
| ------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **From** | Where you stand, named after the nearest place the cab company knows (within 60 m). |
| **Bound for** | One of the town's places, your map waypoint (up to 3 miles away), or *Tell the driver on the way*. **Up / Down** or the arrows choose. |
| **To driver** | A short note, up to 60 characters. It is printed on the driver's telegram. |

The blank shows how many cabs are on duty and how far the nearest one is. **Enter** sends the wire for 5 cents (`Config.Calls.WireFee`); **Esc** tears it up. After a wire, the same player waits 30 seconds before the next one (`Config.Calls.Cooldown`).

## Wire with /taxi

`/taxi` opens the same blank anywhere within 1000 m of a cab office (`Config.Calls.Command`, `Config.Calls.Radius`). Set `Command = false` to allow wires only at the counters.

## Hail a cab

On foot, near a cab that has its **flag up** and a player at the wheel, the **Hail the cab** prompt appears (within 12 m, `Config.Calls.HailDistance`). Hailing is free. Only that driver is asked. If they pass or do not answer, you hear *The cab did not stop.*

## While the cab comes

A small line at the top left of the screen shows your wire:

* *Wire sent to Tremont Dispatch* and *Waiting for a cab* with a clock, until a driver takes it. If nobody does within two minutes: *No cab answered your wire.*
* The driver's name, their cab number and how many minutes away they are, with a ring that fills as they get close.
* *Your cab is here. Get in the back.* when they stop beside you.

**X** cancels the cab until you are riding (`Config.Keys.Cancel`).

If your driver ends the shift, leaves or loses the cab before you get in, your wire goes back on the line for the other drivers: *Your cab was called away. Your wire is back on the line.*

## The ride

Get into a back seat of **your** cab. The meter starts and your line shows the fare as it runs and where you are going.

The ride ends when you get out (or the driver presses K). A ride that ran less than 20 seconds is free (`Config.Calls.MinMeterSec`).

## Settling the fare

A fare slip opens:

* The fare from the meter, the route and the miles.
* A tip: **None**, 25 cents, 50 cents or a dollar (`Config.Calls.Tips`). **A / D** or a click changes it; the smallest tip is chosen when the slip opens.
* Stars for the ride. **W / S** or a click.
* **Enter** pays the total.

If you do not answer within 45 seconds (`Config.Calls.PayTimeout`), the meter fare is taken with no tip and four stars.

If you carry less than the total, what you have is taken and the rest is written in the ledger as unpaid. The driver is told.

After paying, a printed fare ticket shows what you paid and the stars you gave.

{% hint style="info" %}
If the driver has left the server by the time the fare is settled, the fare is waived and nothing is taken. A passenger who leaves the server during the ride pays nothing, and the driver's ledger shows the fare as unpaid.
{% endhint %}
