# Playing

Playing with CAS Crafting: making a fire, cooking with herbs, remedies ground in a mortar, crafting from the satchel, the menu keys and pamphlets.

## Making a fire

Use the **Camp** kit from your satchel. The screen fades like the game's camp and a fire burns in front of you. You keep the kit, and a new fire takes the old one away (one fire each). The fire burns out after 20 minutes ("Your camp fire went out."). To put it out yourself, stand at it and hold **F** (Put out fire): your character kicks it out.

You cannot make a fire in a town, indoors, in water, near train tracks, on a horse or in combat; the game's own lines tell you why.

## At a fire

Walk up to your fire, or to a camp fire or fireplace of the map. The **Campfire** prompts appear:

* **Rest by fire** (E, hold): sit down at the fire.
* **Craft/Cook** (R, hold): kneel at the fire and open the crafting menu. From a seat it works the same.
* **Get up** (F) when you sit.

### Cooking

Open the **Food** tab. Every kind of meat is listed once, with how many you carry. Pick the seasoning with **A / D**: Plain, Wild Mint, Oregano or Creeping Thyme. Seasoned meat gives more: mint restores more Health Core, oregano more Stamina Core, thyme more Dead Eye Core, and seasoned big game gives a gold core for a day.

Press **Enter** to cook. Your character holds the cut on the knife over the fire. It is done in 10 seconds; hold **Craft Faster** (Space) to sear it and finish in 7. Then **Eat** it there (three bites) or **Stow** it.

### Remedies and horse care

Tonics, health cures, bitters, snake oil, coffee and the horse remedies are made at the fire. For remedies and horse remedies your character first stands and grinds the herbs with a mortar and pestle (Rockstar's herbalist animation), then kneels and crafts over the fire; hold **Craft Faster** to finish in 6 seconds instead of 10. Then **Use Item** (drink it there) or **Stow**. Where the server turns Dead Eye off, the snake oils (Dead Eye only) are not listed. Horse remedies, bait and cover scent are always stowed, as in the game; use them from the satchel.

## From the satchel

Type `/craft` or press **J** anywhere. You kneel (or stay in the saddle) and the menu shows what you can make without a fire: ammunition, arrows, fire bottles, dynamite, throwing knives, tomahawks, bait and the horse meal. Recipes that need a fire are listed and marked **Campfire**. Standing at a fire, `/craft` opens the fire menu.

## The menu

| Key | |
| ----- | ------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Q / E | the six groups: Food, Remedies, Ammo, Weapons, Hunting, Horse Care |
| W / S | choose |
| A / D | the seasoning, or another recipe for the same thing (Recipe 1 to 4) |
| Z / X | how many |
| R | all recipes, or only what you can make now |
| Enter | make it |
| Esc | close |

The menu sits on the right of the screen, so your character and the fire stay in view; the six groups run along the bottom as a trail (I to VI). The mouse works on everything. Each recipe shows what it needs, what you carry and why you cannot make it yet: missing ingredients, a pamphlet you have not read, a fire, or a full satchel.

## Pamphlets

Many recipes are locked until you read their pamphlet, as in the game. Use the pamphlet from your satchel: your character holds it up and reads the printed page (zoom with the mouse, **Put Away** with F), and learns its recipes for good. The pamphlet stays in your satchel. Where to get them depends on your server's shops; see [Pamphlets](/script-documentation/cas-crafting/pamphlets.md).

## Using what you make

Use cooked meat, tonics, coffee and cover scent from your satchel: your character eats, drinks or rubs it on with the game's animation, and the game's effects follow (cores, fortify, gold cores). Horse items work on your horse when you ride it or stand next to it (with CAS Stables, the horse you called out); the reviver brings a downed horse back. Bait is set down where you stand and draws animals.
