# How to fish

How fishing works in RedM with CAS Fishing — casting, bait, the bite, the fight and landing the catch.

## 1. Get a rod and some bait

Buy a fishing rod, and bait to go on it. Both are sold at bait and tackle shops.

Take the rod out of your satchel like any other weapon. **An empty hook catches nothing** — the rod will not even cast without something on it.

## 2. Put bait on the hook

Use a bait from your satchel, or type `/fish` to open the tackle ledger and choose from what you are carrying.

The ledger shows what each bait pulls in **this water**, so it is worth opening before you cast rather than guessing.

## 3. Cast

Hold aim and release. Distance is up to you.

## 4. Wait

Watch the float. How long the wait is depends on the bait, the water, the time of day and the weather — night and rain both bring fish up.

## 5. Hook it

When something takes the bait, strike. Too early and you pull it out of the fish's mouth; too late and it is gone.

## 6. Fight it

This is the part that matters.

{% hint style="info" %}
**Reeling loads the line. Letting go relieves it.**
{% endhint %}

* **While it rests** — reel. This is where you gain ground.
* **While it runs** — ease off. Pulling against a run loads the line, and the load gets worse the longer you keep it up.
* **Never do nothing.** Leave the line slack and the fish works the hook loose.

You can pull against a run if you want the ground. It is simply expensive — and that is the decision the fight is built around.

Three ways to lose it:

| What happened | Why |
| ------------------------ | -------------------------------- |
| The line snapped | Too much tension |
| It worked the hook loose | You left the line slack too long |
| It tore free | Sometimes they win |

## 7. Land it

Fill the ring and the fish is drawn in on the line, then lifted out. Keep it or throw it back.

Natural bait goes into the water with the catch and has to be replaced. Lures come back.

## Selling

Take your catch to a fish market. The buyer's board is keyboard-driven:

| Key | Does |
| --------- | ---------------------- |
| **↑ ↓** | Move through the catch |
| **Enter** | Sell one species |
| **← →** | How many |
| **Shift** | Adjust five at a time |
| **A** | Sell everything |
| **Esc** | Leave |

Prices are not flat. Demand for each species drifts from day to day, so the board is worth reading before you empty the satchel — and selling a full satchel at once pays better than trickling one fish in at a time.
