# Driving

How to drive the CAS RedM Cars. Keys, starting the engine with the starter or the hand crank, engine damage, fuel use, and righting a tipped car.

## Keys

| Key | Where | What it does |

| **E** | Next to a car | Get in. The door opens, the character climbs in and sits |

| **X** | Driver seat | Start or stop the engine |
| **G** | Driver seat | The bulb horn |

| **U** | In the car | Fold the windshield |
| **O** | In the car | The lamps |

The in-car keys are key mappings: every player can change them in the game's key settings. While the car stands still, a hint shows the keys the car has.

## Starting the engine

Press **X** in the driver seat. The starter turns the engine over before it catches: longer and less reliably as the engine wears. A badly damaged engine may need several tries.

### The hand crank

Every car can be started by hand. Crouch at the front of the car next to the crank and press **G** again and again to pull it. A healthy engine catches in a few pulls, a worn one takes more. The crank can kick back.

## Engine damage

The engine has its own health, from new to dead. Hits damage it by how much speed the car loses in one moment. A hit to the front does the most damage, a hit to the rear the least.

| Engine health | What happens |
| ------------- | ------------------------------------------------ |
| Below 70% | Light smoke from under the hood, backfires |
| Below 45% | The engine can stall and may need several starts |
| Below 40% | Thick smoke, steam from the radiator, knocking |
| 0% | The engine is dead and will not start |

Repair it with a Repair Kit (see [Engine Repair](/script-documentation/cas-redm-cars/repair.md)), which brings it back to 75%. Staff can set it with `/c1910repair`.

## Fuel

Every car has its own tank (see [The Cars](/script-documentation/cas-redm-cars/cars.md)). The engine burns fuel while it runs, more on the throttle. When the tank runs low the engine misfires. When it is empty the car stalls and will not start. Fill it at a fuel pump (see [Fuel Pumps](/script-documentation/cas-redm-cars/fuel.md)).

## Righting a tipped car

If a car rolls onto its side, press **E** to climb out. Next to a tipped, empty and stopped car, hold **G** to push it back onto its wheels.

## What stays with the car

Engine health, fuel, odometer, paint and plate stay with an owned car. The garage saves them when the car is put away, when its owner leaves and every minute while it is out.
