# Using the device

What players can do with CAS Telegram — numbers, wires, circles, the marketplace, the notice board and privacy settings.

## Opening it

```
/telegram
```

**Escape** closes it. Change the command in `config.lua`:

```lua
Config.Command = 'telegram'
```

Written without the slash.

## Numbers

Every character is given a free number the first time they open the device. A number looks like `VAL-0417`, where the letters are the telegraph office that issued it.

A character can hold more than one number at a time and switch between them. The device shows whichever one is active, and wires arrive on that one.

Extra numbers are bought in **Numbers**:

| Kind                         | What it is                                                  |
| ---------------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------- |
| Standard, premium, legendary | Ordinary numbers. Shorter numbers cost more. |
| Anonymous | The sender's name is withheld. Cautious contacts refuse it. |
| Burner | Expires after a set time and takes its messages with it. |
| Company | Carries a verified mark for businesses and gangs. |

Prices are set in Configuration.

## Finding someone

Three ways:

1. They tell you their number and you save it in **Book**.
2. You search for them by name in the public register, under **Numbers**. See Public register.
3. They wire you first.

{% hint style="warning" %}
A player can only be wired by someone in their address book unless they change it. Under **Settings** then **Privacy** then **Who may wire me**, the default is **Contacts only**. Set it to **Anyone** to be reachable by strangers.
{% endhint %}

## Wires

A wire is a message. Players can send:

* Text
* A photograph from the ones that ship with the resource
* A map reference
* A contact card
* A document
* A voice recording, if you have voice switched on

They can reply to a single message, react to one, and pin one to the top of a conversation.

## Circles

A circle is a shared line. Four kinds:

| Kind         | Who talks                                     |
| ------------ | --------------------------------------------- |
| Group | Everyone, unless the founder says otherwise |
| Channel      | Only the broadcaster                          |
| Paid channel | Only the broadcaster, and members pay to join |
| Company line | Everyone, with a verified mark |

Opening one costs money. The founder can invite people by number, promote members to administrator, mute them, or remove them, and can decide what ordinary members are allowed to do.

A private circle cannot be joined from the list. The only way in is an invitation from someone already on it.

## Marketplace

Players list items with a price, a stock count, and a picture. Buyers pay, the seller is paid the rest after the exchange takes its cut, and both are told.

The cut is set with `Config.MarketFee`.

## The notice board

Everything cried by the town crier is kept on a board under **Notices**, so a player who was offline can still read it.

## Settings

Each player has their own. The ones that matter to other people:

| Setting                        | Effect                                                      |
| ------------------------------ | ----------------------------------------------------------- |
| Who may wire me | Anyone, contacts only, or nobody |
| Show when I am on the line | Whether contacts see the green lamp |
| Send read marks | Whether senders see that a wire was read |
| List me in the public register | Whether the name search finds them |
| Hide my number from listings | Marketplace shows the handle only |
| Quiet hours | Off, night, or always. Always also silences the town crier. |
