# The Ceremony

Running a wedding ceremony in the RedM Wedding & Marriage System: beginning at the altar, witnesses, NPC and player officiants, signing the marriage register, sealing it and the marriage certificate.

On the booked day the couple meets at the altar. They begin the ceremony, and the marriage register opens on their screens. The couple, their witnesses and the officiant each draw their signature. Once every signature is in, the register is sealed and the couple is married.

## Beginning

The altar is the spot on the aisle in front of the podium, under the floral arch at the Mayor's Garden. The officiant, **Reverend Josiah Pell**, stands behind it.

To begin:

1. Come during the couple's window: from **15 minutes** before the booked hour until **30 minutes** after it ends.
2. One partner stands within **3 m** of the altar. The other must be online and within **15 m** of it.
3. Hold **E** on **Begin the Ceremony**.

The partner who begins leads the ceremony. The register opens for both of them, and a burst of confetti goes up over the altar.

If the ceremony cannot begin, a notification says why: the booking is at another hour, the partner is not there, or the partner is busy in another ceremony.

## The register

The register lists everyone who must sign, in order:

| Place                           | Who                                                          |
| ------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------ |
| The Bride, the Groom, or Spouse | Each partner, by their character's gender |
| First and Second Witness | Players chosen by the couple, when witnesses are on |
| Officiant | The venue's NPC officiant, or a player with an officiant job |

Each signer draws their signature with the mouse on their line. **Undo** and **Clear** fix it, **Sign** sets it down. A signature can be redone until the register is sealed. Every signer sees each signature appear as soon as it is set down.

## Witnesses

```lua
Config.Ceremony.Witnesses = 0   -- 0, 1 or 2
```

With `0`, the default, only the couple and the officiant sign. With `1` or `2`, the couple needs that many witnesses.

The partner who leads chooses them with **Choose witnesses**, exactly as many as are needed. The list shows the players within 15 m of the altar. The couple cannot witness their own wedding, and a player already in another ceremony cannot be chosen. The chosen witnesses get the register on their screen and a notification. They can be replaced until one of them has signed.

## The officiant

The venue's NPC officiant always stands ready and counts as signed.

A player can officiate instead, if their job is in:

```lua
Config.Ceremony.PlayerOfficiantJobs = { "priest", "preacher", "judge" }
```

The partner who leads picks them with **Choose officiant** from the players within 15 m. **Use the chapel's officiant** switches back to the NPC. A player officiant may also seal the register. Set the list to `{}` to turn player officiants off.

{% hint style="info" %}
On RSG Core, these jobs do not exist by default. See [VORP and RSG Core](/script-documentation/cas-wedding/frameworks.md#player-officiants).
{% endhint %}

## Sealing

When every line is signed, the partner who leads, or a player officiant, chooses **Seal the Register**. Everyone in the register must still be within 15 m of the altar.

Sealing:

* marries the couple and records the date, the venue, the officiant, the witnesses and every signature,
* gives each spouse a **marriage certificate** in their satchel,
* marks the booking as completed,
* sets off confetti, fireworks and, if NPC guests are out, 10 seconds of applause. See [Celebrations](/script-documentation/cas-wedding/venue.md#celebrations).

The register then shows **Lawfully Wed** and the certificate number.

## When a ceremony stops

| What happens                                                             | Result                                                                                                              |
| ------------------------------------------------------------------------ | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| The partner who leads chooses **Call off** | The ceremony ends for everyone |
| A partner goes more than about 22 m from the altar, or leaves the server | The ceremony ends |
| A witness or a player officiant walks away or leaves | They are taken off the register and their signature is removed. The NPC officiant takes the officiant's place again |
| 30 minutes pass without sealing (`SessionMinutes`)                       | The ceremony ends                                                                                                   |

The booking is kept. The couple can begin again as long as their window is still open.

## The certificate

The certificate is a `marriage_certificate` item. Using it opens the certificate: the state and county, both names, the date, the venue, the officiant, every signature and the certificate number, such as `NH-1899-0007`. A dissolved marriage's certificate is marked **Dissolved by decree of the court**.

The certificate can also be opened from the marriage records with **View Certificate**. From there, a spouse can:

* **Print Copy.** Adds a certified copy to your satchel for $2 (`Config.Marriage.CertificateCopyPrice`).
* **Give Copy.** Hands a certified copy to players within 4 m, $2 each.

If a spouse's satchel was full when the register was sealed, they are told so, and can print a copy this way.
